Sea Point Family Afternoon
A documentary session along the promenade with two young children.
No posing, no list of shots. Just a slow walk from the pavilion to the tidal pool and back, with the kids setting the pace and the parents free to be themselves.
We ran for roughly ninety minutes on a bright, slightly hazy afternoon. The south-easter had pushed thin cloud across the bay the night before, which softened the light just enough to work with. Most frames are handheld on a 28mm, kept close to the family rather than standing back and directing.
The brief
Follow the children and let the afternoon unfold. The parents had done a posed shoot before and wanted something looser, so we agreed there would be no shot list and no stopping to arrange anyone.
Working the light
Midday sun on the promenade is hard and flat, so we kept the sea behind us for most of the walk. That put the family in open shade with the water as a bright backdrop, and let us shoot into the haze without losing faces.
What we came back with
A set built on in-between moments: a child running ahead, a hand held, a pause at the tidal pool. Wide coastal frames sit next to close, unposed ones, all captioned with location, time of day, and the lens used.
If you have never done a session like this
It helps to know that nothing is staged. We walk, we talk, and the pictures come from what actually happens. Wind on the promenade is the one thing we cannot plan around, so we read the forecast the night before and shift the start time if the south-easter looks too strong. If the weather turns, we reschedule rather than push through it.
